Ilanga Ntaba Guest Lodge is a paradise for fishermen. The Lodge is situated in the middle of the Hibiscus Coast which is strewn with many deserted beaches and high rocky outcrops. This unforgettable paradise for fishermen supports a wide variety of fish, from Hammerhead shark to the more popular and widely known shad and garrick. The coastline is a series of alternating sandy beaches with a rocky peninsula at each end, ideal for all types of fishing (beach and rock). Most of these beaches feature a lagoon or river which usually support the sought-after ‘wide mouth bass’ a great fighting fish even though quite small in South African terms, but still quite the aggressive fighter. Also these fish have found their way into the many dams dotted around the countryside. These dams, some of which supply water to the banana and cane fields are usually accessible where you can lure fish or fly fish for these lovely fighting fish, but it would be advisable to ask your local fishing shop for advice of where and when.
Shelly Beach, Margate, Ramsgate and Port Edward and many of the lesser coastal towns all have boats that will head off to the Protea Reef for a wide variety of game fishing which include large yellowtail, bronze bream, kingfish and stumpy’s. Also not to be forgotten is the more sought after sailfish and the larger tuna which are fished on the drift. You may be lucky and see some of the other visitors to the coast such as whales and dolphins which also like to feed on the sardine and not excluding the large variety of sharks, from the infamous Zambezi to the Tiger and the Grey just to mention a few. Of course all this fishing is seasonal, and the best time is when the sardine run is in full flow (June to July). Fishing in these well equipped boats of about 10-12 metres, where all the tackle is provided, is quite an experience. You are dumped out to sea from the beach from the trailer and by tractor into the surf and on return, the boat is driven straight up onto the beach. Information for these trips can be obtained from any local tackle shop as well as fishing around the coastline in general, the owners are always pleased to help, and this is always an important source of local knowledge.". |
